Director's Welcome

Welcome to the Middle Eastern Studies Program (MES) and the Middle East Center (MEC) at Florida State University, where we are dedicated to fostering a comprehensive understanding of the diverse cultures, histories, and contemporary issues of the Middle East. As the only interdisciplinary Bachelor of Arts degree in Middle Eastern Studies in the state of Florida, we provide an exceptional opportunity for students to delve deeply into this rich and complex region. Additionally, we offer minors in Arabic, Middle Eastern Studies, and Hebrew, enabling students to enhance their language skills and cultural knowledge.

Our Bachelor’s degree program, inaugurated in 2002 with the support of a Title VI-A grant from the U.S. Department of Education, is designed to provide academic rigor and encourage critical thinking and cultural awareness. The MES program is enriched by a faculty composed of distinguished scholars and practitioners, each bringing a unique perspective and expertise, ranging from politics and history to art and religion.

The MEC is also committed to serving our larger community in Northern Florida through a dynamic outreach program. This initiative includes hosting thought-provoking lectures, interdisciplinary symposiums, and various events throughout the academic year. One of our highlights is our annual film festival, which showcases films from and about the Middle East, offering audiences an insightful glimpse into the region's vibrant narrative and diverse experiences. In addition, we have developed a comprehensive K-8 educational program that introduces Middle Eastern culture to various after-school programs, fostering cultural appreciation among younger audiences.

The MES and MEC's mission is to promote a deeper understanding of all regions of the Middle East while providing students with the resources and support necessary for research, teaching, and career advancement. Our alumni have a track record of success, pursuing graduate degrees at prestigious institutions and securing fulfilling positions in various sectors, including government agencies, non-profit organizations, and academia.

We invite you to explore our center's diverse activities and opportunities by visiting our homepage. We also encourage you to consider becoming a friend of the MEC, as your support helps us continue our vital work. If you would like to stay informed about our events and initiatives, please do not hesitate to email us; we will happily add you to our mailing list.

We look forward to welcoming you to our vibrant community and hope to see you at one of our upcoming events!

Zafer Lababidi, Ph.D.
